Packing medical devices in medical sterilization wrap.

Sterile barrier systems

A sterile barrier system (SBS) is an essential part of a sterile medical device. SBS packaging must be able to withstand sterilization processes, transport and storage, and provide an effective barrier against microorganisms, and allow for aseptic presentation at the point of use.

The SBA has collected useful information on the following pages to help healthcare professionals understand the role SBS play in protecting patients and how to use SBS correctly, and to help them identify different SBS types. This includes information related to packing instruments using different types of sterilization packaging solutions, aseptic opening of the SBS, and disposal methods in a patient care unit.
