Disposal methods

Proper disposal of medical packaging is crucial for patient safety, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance.

Disposal of medical packaging in hospitals

Proper disposal of medical packaging is crucial for patient safety, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance. Hospitals handle a variety of sterile barrier systems and medical packaging materials, which must be sorted and disposed of according to local, national, and EU regulations.

Key disposal methods

General recycling

Clean, uncontaminated packaging made of paperboard, plastic, and aluminium can be recycled through standard hospital waste streams.

The new PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) emphasizes the need for increased recyclability and mandates that all packaging placed on the EU market must be designed for recycling.

Infectious waste disposal

Packaging that has been exposed to biological contaminants (e.g., blood, bodily fluids) must be treated as infectious waste and disposed of via hospital incineration or other approved hazardous waste management systems.

Regulatory Reference: The EU Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) and national healthcare waste regulations set guidelines for handling such materials.

Plastic waste management

PPWR introduces new targets for plastic packaging reduction and increased use of recycled content. Hospitals should follow manufacturer recommendations on plastic separation to improve recyclability.

Some high-performance polymer materials used in sterile barrier systems may require specialized recycling programs.

Sustainable alternatives and reuse

Hospitals are encouraged to explore recyclable or reusable transport packaging while maintaining sterility and patient safety.

Under the PPWR, producers must meet extended producer responsibility (EPR) obligations, ensuring that more sustainable options are available for hospitals.

Regulatory Compliance and Future Changes

The PPWRavautuu uuteen ikkunaan, expected to be fully implemented by 2030, will harmonize packaging waste rules across the EU, imposing stricter recycling and reuse targets. Hospitals and healthcare providers should work closely with suppliers to stay compliant with evolving legislation.
